For decades, Leonard Peltier has represented both the deep wounds and the possibility of healing in the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the United States government. As an Indian boarding school survivor, Leonard’s personal journey embodies the intergenerational trauma our communities have endured, as well as our resilience and unwavering spirit in the face of systemic injustice. Former President Biden’s decision to commute Peltier’s sentence represents a critical step in the long journey toward truth, healing, and repair for Indigenous communities.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the Native American advocates and allies who have worked tirelessly for decades advocating for Leonard’s release. Your unwavering commitment to justice has been instrumental in reaching this moment.
As we witness this development in Leonard’s story, I am particularly moved by the timing of the film Free Leonard Peltier premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27th. I am honored to have served as Co-Executive Producer on this project and to have supported bringing this story to the world. This documentary will serve as a platform to continue sharing Leonard’s story and the broader narrative of Indigenous justice in America.

Leonard’s journey home to be with his family in his final years reminds us of the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up the fight for justice. May this moment inspire us all to work toward a future where we all connect, relate, and belong.
